Round 6: Canadian National MX Series – Deschambault

Deschambault, Quebec

August 8, 2004

Although a clean sweep eluded him, Jean Sebastien Roy nailed down the 250cc overall in front of a Roaring home province crowd at Deschambault, QC with 1-2 motos. Not only that, with his sixth victory of the season, JSR tallied enough points to clinch a fourth consecutive title. It’s a done deal! Four seasons of CMRC 250 Nationals have translated into four championships, 37 moto wins and 20 overalls for the mighty Quebecer on board his Honda Canada Blackfoot Thor Red Rocket Honda CR250R.

“Winning the overall and the championship in front of my crowd, my family, my friends, was just awesome. Everybody was there. I wasn’t really expecting to win the title in Deschambault. I thought it would go down to the last round, actually,” said JSR. “But I had a bit of luck this weekend with Damon Huffman and John Dowd having mechanical problems. I guess it was their turn for a little bad luck after what happened with my flat tires in Moncton, I would like to take this opportunity to thank Honda Canada, Blackfoot Racing, my mechanic Andrew McLean, our suspension guru Joe Skidd as well as all our other great sponsors for their support and efforts in our program allowing me the opportunity to win again in

2004”

In the first 250 moto, JSR managed a top five start behind hole-shoter Brad Hagseth. JSR’s Honda Canada Blackfoot Racing Thor team-mates, Dusty “The Kid” Klatt and Damon Huffman, found themselves mid pack. By the end of lap three, JSR had wrestled the lead from Hagseth and checked out, much to the delight of the Quebec fans. Klatt wasted no time knifing his way through the pack to take

up third place behind Blair Morgan. Although “The Kid” mounted a fierce battle to get past Morgan, time ran out and he had to settle for third at the checkers. An unfortunate Huffy, meanwhile, was unable to mount his patented wide open charge through the pack due to technical problems that forced him to retire to the paddock.

The second 250 holeshot was claimed by Mitchell Cooke, with JSR and “The Kid” burning Cooke’s rear fender. In an attempt to pass the Atlantic Canada rider, some two corners into the moto, JSR washed out his front end and was relegated to a distant 22 nd place in the field. Klatt saw his opportunity and powered his FMF/PR2/Trent Hoffman tuned CR250R past a surprised Cooke.  Once in the lead, “The Kid” let no grass grow over the track and parted company with Cooke and the rest of his pursuers.

JSR, not to be denied, sliced and diced his way through the pack to end up in a fierce duel with one-time archrival Morgan in the closing laps of the moto. Intent on winning the overall at Deschambault, something that was denied him last year, JSR put a pass on Morgan to finish second behind Klatt. JSR had his overall in the bag while Klatt was good for second on the podium, thanks to 3-1 motos. Huffman, meanwhile, faced with another mid pack start, picked off rider after rider on what had turned into an extremely rough track. He snared a noteworthy fourth at the flag.

In 125 East action, Shane Lusk booked an average start in the first moto that saw him in 14th place after one lap.  While starting to motor his way into the front ranges of the field he was taken down by another rider. Lusk remounted in 32nd position and then worked his way up to 13th, only to wash

out the front end. He rejoined the race in 24th place, turning that into 20th at the finish line.

Lusk had to settle for another mid pack start in the second moto but this time he was determined not to repeat the mistakes he made in moto one. It took him just a few laps to work his way into ninth. Only a few seconds separated the top ten at that point with everybody fighting tooth-and-nail for positions.

As the laps wound down, and the field started spreading out, Lusk systematically knifed his way into a

respectable 6th by the time the checkers were waved.

Team Honda Canada would like to extend a special “thanks” to all the team sponsors, the fans, as well as the staff and volunteers at Deschambault MX Track for their efforts in putting on a superb event again this year.
